In Uzbekistan, mosques have been equipped with external loudspeakers to promptly alert the population in emergency situations. The project was implemented in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
To date, mosques in the Jizzakh, Kashkadarya, Namangan, Samarkand, Syrdarya, Tashkent, and Fergana regions have been connected to the system. As a result, nearly 6.5 million people can be promptly informed about emergency alerts.
The selection of mosques is not random—they provide wide coverage in populated areas. The loudspeakers ensure audibility from 500 to 2000 meters. The system is capable of operating even when mobile communications or electricity are cut off, which makes it serve as a reliable source of information.
As an additional part of the project, 28 external screens have been installed on main roads and crowded places, which will be used as an additional channel for delivering emergency messages. The system is particularly important for the elderly, children, and persons with disabilities.
