The budget for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, has been reduced by more than $100 million. This was reported by The Athletic.
According to the information, FIFA's 2024 report presented the budget allocated for 2023-2026, with the competition's operational costs estimated at $1.12 billion. Together with prize money and television operations, the total budget was expected to amount to $3.75 billion.
According to the publication's sources, the reduction of costs by more than $100 million has caused concern among the organization's staff. A FIFA representative stated that the budget review process is a normal practice, and through this, funds are redirected to develop football worldwide.
For reference, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first to feature 48 national teams and the competition will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
