China has called on US authorities to investigate the death of a Chinese semiconductor researcher who died in the US following a "hostile interrogation."
US media identified the researcher as Danghao Wang from the University of Michigan. According to CBS News, Wang died shortly after being interviewed by federal investigators.
A statement from the University of Michigan said the researcher died on March 19 after falling from a campus building, citing a "possible self-harm incident."
Liu Pengyu, the press secretary of the Chinese Embassy in the US, told the BBC on Friday that he was "deeply saddened by this tragedy." He added that China had made serious representations to relevant US government agencies and universities on multiple occasions, contacted the victim's family, and called for "active assistance with the aftermath."
Liu also reminded Chinese students in the US of the need to "enhance safety" and "properly manage interactions with US law enforcement agencies."
Both the university and China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to officially confirm the researcher's identity, emphasizing respect for the family and private life. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated the call for a US investigation into Wang's case during a briefing with the BBC on Wednesday.
