Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was killed during armed clashes that took place in the country. This was reported by the Al Jazeera TV channel.
According to Arab media reports, the incident occurred in the area of a residence located near the city of Zintan in western Libya.
According to sources, Saif al-Islam was killed during a shootout with armed individuals in the garden of his home. This information has been confirmed by a source close to the Gaddafi family and its representative.
According to Libya's Al Ahrar TV channel, the attack was carried out by four armed individuals. They fled the scene after wounding Saif al-Islam. Political groups close to Gaddafi reported that the attackers had previously disabled surveillance cameras at the residence.
According to reports, Saif al-Islam resisted the armed individuals and was killed around 14:30 local time. A special operation is currently being organized to retrieve his body. Sources note that the incident occurred against the backdrop of clashes that began after noon.
Al-Hadat TV channel previously wrote that some Libyan media had spread reports that Saif al-Islam was killed in a battle with the 444th Combat Brigade, which is affiliated with the Libyan National Unity Government. However, the brigade denied this information, stating that it has no military units in or around the city of Zintan and is not involved in the incident.
For reference, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was born on June 25, 1972. He is considered the second son of Muammar Gaddafi, who was killed in 2011. In the late 1990s, he led the activities of the Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation and participated in a number of international negotiations.
Captured by rebels during the Libyan civil war in 2011, Saif al-Islam was sentenced to death in 2015 but was released in 2017 under a general amnesty. In 2021, the Libyan prosecutor's office issued an arrest warrant for him.
Muammar Gaddafi ruled Libya for 42 years. In 2011, he was overthrown against the backdrop of opposition movements supported by NATO and was killed near the city of Sirte. Since then, the country has been in a state of political instability with competing administrations.
