At least 21 people died and nearly 100 passengers were injured to varying degrees as a result of a major railway accident in Spain's Cordoba province.
According to "Reaturs", the tragedy occurred on January 18 near the city of Adamuz in the Cordoba province in southern Spain. It is reported that one of the high-speed trains derailed, crossed into the opposite track, and collided with a second train. As a result of the incident, both trains derailed, with one of them overturning from a height.
According to police data, the number of fatalities is at least 21, about 100 passengers were injured, 25 of them in serious condition. All victims were taken to medical institutions in Andalusia.
The accident occurred around 18:40 local time, shortly after a train belonging to the private operator Iryo departed from Cordoba to Madrid. The second train — an Alvia belonging to the Renfe company — was traveling from Madrid to Huelva, and its speed at the time of the collision was approximately 200 km/h.
The causes of the incident have not yet been determined. Spain's Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, stated that the derailment on a straight section of track raises serious questions. An investigation into the situation is being conducted by Adif, the railway infrastructure operator.
Rescue services and military units have been mobilized to the scene of the tragedy. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez canceled all his scheduled events and took personal control of the situation. The royal family expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
