On January 9, the Russian Armed Forces struck the city of Lviv, Ukraine, with an "Oreshnik" missile. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
It is noted that this attack was carried out in response to the attack on the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Novgorod region on December 29, 2025.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi reported that this was the first time the city had been struck by such a type of missile. According to him, the missile traveled along a ballistic trajectory at a speed of approximately 13 thousand kilometers per hour.
Also, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that on the evening of January 8, a missile threat alert was declared across the entire country. This was related to the possibility of a ballistic missile launch from the Kapustin Yar range in the Astrakhan region at 00:30 Moscow time on January 9.
According to Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, the strike may have been aimed at important infrastructure facilities. In particular, it is assumed that the "Stryi" gas field and gas storage facility were targeted.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, in turn, called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, as well as for joint measures within the framework of the Ukraine-NATO Council and European organizations.
We recall that Russia had previously used the "Oreshnik" missile in a strike on the city of Dnipro on the night of November 20-21, 2024. At that time, Vladimir Putin described it as a non-nuclear hypersonic ballistic missile.
