UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his alarm at reports of the use of force by security forces during the ongoing mass protests in Iran, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people. His statement was published on the official UN website on January 11.

According to Guterres, all Iranians have the right to express their grievances and protests peacefully and without fear. "The rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and peaceful demonstration, as enshrined in international law, must be fully respected and protected," said the UN head.

He called on Iranian officials to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from using "unnecessary or disproportionate" force. He also urged Tehran to ensure access to information, including by taking measures to restore communications and the internet.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also expressed her support for the demonstrators in Iran. Addressing "the brave women, students, men, and women who have taken to the streets" on social media, she emphasized that "any regime that fears its own people blocks communication."

For reference, mass protest demonstrations against the Iranian leadership have been ongoing since December 28, 2025. Despite strict security measures and internet restrictions, protesters continue to take to the streets in Tehran and other major cities.
