Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death. She was removed from power following her forceful suppression of major student-led protest demonstrations in 2024.

According to UN data, nearly 1,400 people were killed during these disturbances, the majority of whom lost their lives as a result of shootings by security forces. The court noted that ordering these very actions was the primary accusation against Hasina.

No official comment has been made regarding the verdict, but international organizations have expressed concerns about the transparency of the judicial process in Bangladesh.
