The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors held an emergency meeting following the attacks on Iran's nuclear sites by Israel and the US. At the meeting, the agency's chief, Rafael Mariano Grossi, stated that the diplomatic path remains open but should it fail, the world could face a disaster beyond imagination said.
According to Grossi, on June 13th, he received a letter from the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, informing him about "special measures taken" to protect nuclear instruments and materials. In response, the IAEA reminded Tehran that any movement of nuclear materials must be declared within the framework of agreements with the agency.
Grossi stated that ceasing hostilities is vital for allowing IAEA inspectors access to nuclear facilities. He emphasized that Tehran has the right to take any protective measures while complying with international obligations.
Explaining the strikes on the underground part of the Fordo facility, Grossi highlighted that the agency does not have complete information about the extent of the destruction. However, considering the sensitivity of the used explosives and centrifuges to vibrations, serious damage is expected.
Meanwhile, the Iranian side informed the IAEA that no increase in radiation background has been noted at all three sites. According to the agency's information, no changes have been observed at other facilities yet.
Grossi expressed gratitude to the Iranian government for ensuring the safety of IAEA inspectors and emphasized the importance of continuing cooperation at a time when the situation is escalating.
