Hungary's expected to assume the prime minister position Péter Magyar announced that he will halt the country's process of withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC). This was reported by Zamon.uz.
It is reported that this process was previously initiated by the current Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Magyar stated that the "Tisza" government is firmly committed to stopping this process and ensuring that Hungary remains a member of the ICC.
Commenting on the issue of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he said: "If a country is a member of the ICC and a person under its arrest warrant enters its territory, that person must certainly be arrested."
Magyar emphasized that he had communicated this position openly to the Israeli Prime Minister and that he had "hidden nothing."
Earlier, Israel's ambassador to Hungary, Maja Kadosh, had stated that Magyar had invited Netanyahu by phone to visit Hungary. According to her words, Netanyahu and Magyar had a "warm conversation" and the Israeli Prime Minister accepted the invitation.
Magyar, commenting to journalists, stated that he had invited "all state leaders" he had spoken with after his election victory to the 70th anniversary of the 1956 revolution.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court accused Netanyahu and then Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of war crimes in the Gaza sector and issued arrest warrants for them.
A day later, Viktor Orbán invited Netanyahu to Hungary, guaranteed that he would not be arrested, and called the ICC's decision "unprecedented, hypocritical, and absolutely unacceptable." Netanyahu visited Hungary in April 2025.
In April 2026, the Orbán administration announced the start of Hungary's process of withdrawal from the ICC's jurisdiction. In June, the country sent an official notification of withdrawal to the UN Secretary-General.
In the parliamentary elections held in Hungary on April 12, the "Tisza" party led by Péter Magyar won and gained a constitutional majority. Thus, Viktor Orbán, who had been prime minister for 16 years, will leave this position.
