On his Truth Social page, Trump announced that he would block the opening of the new automotive bridge connecting Canada and the US — the Gordie Howe Bridge — until Canada provides "full compensation" for all the aid it has received from the US.

The bridge connects Ontario, Canada, with Michigan, USA. The project has been under construction since 2018 and is valued at 6.4 billion Canadian dollars. According to Trump, the US should own at least half of the project, and negotiations must begin immediately.

The bridge was expected to open in early 2026 after testing and certification. Trump's statement has added a new layer of complexity to the economic and political relations between the two countries.
