According to the report by "Kommersant", Daniil Kasatkin has been held in custody in France since June 2025. He was temporarily detained at Charles de Gaulle Airport on June 21, 2025, at the request of US officials, and the extradition issue was subsequently considered.
The US suspected Kasatkin of involvement in cyber fraud cases. According to the charges, he assisted hackers in ransom negotiations. However, the athlete has categorically denied these charges.
In exchange for him, Russia released French citizen Laurent Vinatier, an employee of the Swiss Center for Humanitarian Dialogue, who was detained in 2024. He was accused of violating legislation on foreign agents in Russia and sentenced to three years in prison. According to investigation data, Vinatier collected information on military activities and conscription in the country, and pleaded guilty in court.
It is noted that agreements on the exchange of prisoners and the bodies of deceased soldiers were also discussed during the Russia-Ukraine negotiations held in Istanbul in June 2025.
