At least two people were killed and eight others seriously injured as a result of a shooting that occurred during exam period at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. According to officials, one more person sustained minor injuries. A search for the suspect is underway.

The person who carried out the shooting has not yet been apprehended; he is described as a male dressed in black. According to CNN, details about the suspect are still scarce. According to university officials, the deceased and the injured were students.

Brown University is one of the most prestigious private universities in the United States and a member of the Ivy League. As the television network emphasized, it is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the country.

The shooting occurred in a classroom on the first floor of the engineering and physics faculties, where exams were scheduled to take place that afternoon. One student told the local WJAR TV channel that he hid under a desk for two hours, waiting for the police operation to end.

President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the shooting. "What a terrible event. The only thing we can do right now is pray for the victims. This is a disgrace," Trump told journalists.

Federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are assisting local law enforcement.

"The perpetrator is still at large," Providence Mayor Brett Smiley told journalists. He warned that the number of victims could rise.

Deputy Police Chief Timothy O'Hara said the suspect's identity has not yet been determined. Police believe he is approximately 30 years old, as he was captured on surveillance camera video leaving the building.
