Ninety percent of journalist killings worldwide remain unresolved. This was stated by UN Secretary-General António Guterres in his address on the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.

"I condemn the killing of journalists in Gaza, I am outraged by so many of them, and I call for an independent and impartial investigation. The restrictions preventing international journalists from entering Gaza are completely unacceptable," says António Guterres.

The highest number of confirmed journalist killings were recorded in Arab states (82), Latin America and the Caribbean (34), Africa (5), the Asia-Pacific region (30), and Europe and North America (12).

According to data from "Reporters Without Borders," from 2023 to 2025, at least 1,163 journalists were detained, of whom 568 are still detained in 48 countries.

According to the UN Secretary-General, states must put an end to impunity for killing journalists through prompt, thorough, impartial, and independent investigations.
