A major fire broke out on October 18 at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
According to reports, the fire started around 2:30 PM in the cargo area of the airport. Due to the incident, all flights at the airport have been temporarily suspended. 36 firefighting units have been mobilized to extinguish the fire.
Airport Director Masudul Hasan Masud confirmed the incident and stated that emergency measures are being taken. Officials reported that aircraft safety has been ensured.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines spokesperson Kawser Mahmud provided information that the fire started at 2:15 PM, and the airport fire department, Bangladesh Air Force, and other groups promptly arrived at the scene.
The Inter-Services Public Relations organization announced that civil aviation, fire services, navy and air force, as well as border guard forces are participating in extinguishing the fire. All flights are temporarily suspended, and some aircraft are being diverted to Shah Amanat Airport in Chattogram city and Osmani Airport in Sylhet city.
Damage to cargo is being reported. According to Nasir Uddin, Director of the Bangladesh Freight Forwarders Association, the area where international courier cargo is stored suffered significant damage, and a fire also broke out in a nearby chemical warehouse. There is no information about serious losses or casualties at this time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
