Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on October 9 in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, made a statement regarding the crash of an Azerbaijani passenger plane, which was shot down by Russian air defense systems in December 2024.

Putin acknowledged Russia's fault and stated that the incident was a result of "fragments of a missile fired against Ukrainian drones."

According to Putin, the Embraer E190 aircraft suffered not from a direct missile hit, but from damage caused by fragments. 38 people died in the crash, and 29 survived.

The incident caused a diplomatic crisis between Russia and Azerbaijan. The Kremlin has now stated that issues related to compensation and responsible officials in connection with the tragedy will be reviewed.
