Farooq Azam, a senior advisor at the Ministry of Energy and Water in Afghanistan, has been arrested for suggesting that women be sent as nurses to the Kunar province affected by the earthquake. A military case has been opened against him.

According to the "Afghanistan International" publication, Azam was arrested by the order of the Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada and is currently being held in a special supervisory agency in Kabul.

He has openly defended women's education and their participation in medicine on social media. In his recent posts, he had proposed sending female nurses to Kunar province.

"Are our educated women ready to take the initiative and make sacrifices to secure their place in society? If so — now is the time," wrote Farooq Azam on his page.
