Tom Fletcher, the Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator of the UN Secretary-General, emphasized that the humanitarian crisis formed after the devastating earthquake in Afghanistan shows how severely the reduction of funds allocated for humanitarian work worldwide can result in grave consequences.
According to him, the reduction of funds worldwide is causing the halt of medical and food aid delivery to millions of people and is leading to the scaling back of operations for many humanitarian organizations.
Following the earthquake in Afghanistan, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs allocated $10 million and began providing temporary shelter, food, and medical services. However, Fletcher stated that this is not enough — if additional funds are not mobilized, there could be even more human casualties during the winter season.
It was previously reported that as a result of the 6-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Afghanistan on August 31, over 2200 people were killed and at least 3600 people were injured.
