Former Ukrainian politician Andriy Portnov was shot dead at 09:15 a.m. on May 21, when he was about to get into his Mercedes after bringing his children to school.

According to witnesses, two individuals arrived on motorcycles and fired five shots at Portnov. Three bullets hit him in the back, one in the neck, and one in the head.

The incident occurred in front of one of the most prestigious and expensive schools in the capital, Madrid - American College. The cost of studying at this school exceeds 23 thousand euros per year.

Spanish police are investigating whether the incident could be attributed to a political assassination attempt or debts related to the criminal world. There are speculations that Portnov may have had connections with mafia groups.

Who was Portnov?

Andrey Portnov, born in 1973 in Luhansk, is a lawyer. She was elected to the Ukrainian parliament in 2006 through the Yulia Tymoshenko bloc. Later, he joined Viktor Yanukovych's team and held the position of Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration.

In 2014, he left Ukraine and lived in Moscow and Vienna. A criminal case has been opened against him for the embezzlement of state property. In 2019, he returned to Ukraine and filed a series of applications against former president Petro Poroshenko. After the 2022 Russian invasion, it migrated back to the West.
