The construction of a new international airport in Tashkent is planned to begin in July of this year. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Transport Jasurbek Choriev.
According to him, the public-private partnership (PPP) agreement for the project is expected to be signed by mid-May. The document is currently in its final stage.
"The President has given a clear instruction to start construction work from July," he said.
A large consortium is involved in the project. A main agreement will be signed with a private investor, stipulating all terms.
It has been reported that after the new airport opens, the current Tashkent airport may close. What facility will be built on its site is currently unclear.
Choriev noted that air travel demand in Uzbekistan is growing by approximately 30 percent annually. The current airport is expected to reach its full capacity by 2029.
For this reason, the new airport is planned to have the capacity to handle at least twice as many flights.
