US President Donald Trump announced his intention to increase tariffs against European countries with the aim of purchasing Greenland. He wrote this idea on his Truth Social page, stating that US tariffs would continue to rise until Greenland is acquired. Greenland is considered a large Arctic island of Denmark.
Trump announced that starting February 1st, an additional 10% tariff would be imposed on goods coming from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, and Britain. He said these tariffs would increase to 25% from June 1st and would continue until Greenland is purchased. Trump considers Greenland important for US security.
Following this statement, demonstrations took place in Denmark and Greenland. The protesters opposed the US demands, stating that Greenland should determine its own future. European countries also supported Denmark, expressing that this US action could negatively impact NATO.
Currently, Denmark has sent military personnel to the island to strengthen security regarding Greenland. Negotiations and the tariff issue are expected to continue.
