Shukhrat Sotvoldiev, who was serving his sentence at the strict regime Penal Colony No. 11 in Navoi, was brought to the Navoi regional branch of the RHTYI on November 23 due to a sharp deterioration in his health. It was stated that he was diagnosed with "bilateral severe bronchopneumonia" it was said.

Due to the severity of his health condition, the court also issued a decision on November 26 to release him from punishment. However, he died in the hospital on November 27.

The relatives of the deceased claim that Sotvoldiev was beaten, not examined in a timely manner, and that the doctors concealed the traces of injuries. His daughter stated that her father's neck was swollen and his ribs were broken, and that she tried to see the test results but was refused.

The Representative for Human Rights (Ombudsman) and the Navoi Special Prosecutor's Office confirmed that a pre-investigation check has been initiated regarding the situation. The Prosecutor's Office promised that the investigation would be comprehensive and impartial.

For reference, Shukhrat Sotvoldiev was accused of fraud and document forgery and was sentenced to 9.5 years of imprisonment in April 2025. He had previously attracted public attention by attempting to go on a hunger strike because he could not obtain 9 billion soums.
