From August 2023 to May 2025, 163 journalists were killed worldwide. This was announced by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

UNESCO noted the killing of 163 journalists during this period. Of these, 109, including 12 women, were killed in war zones. The highest number of casualties were identified in the Gaza Strip (46 people), Sudan (13 people), and Ukraine (8 people).

Crimes against journalists are also continuing in countries not at war. For example, in Mexico, 15 media workers were killed — a figure higher than in some war zones.

According to UNESCO data, the highest number of journalist murders were recorded in Arab states (82), Latin America and the Caribbean (34), the Asia-Pacific region (30), Africa (5), and Europe and North America (12).

It should be noted that November 2 is observed as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. This date is dedicated to the memory of two French journalists killed in Mali in 2013.

According to information from the organization "Reporters Without Borders," at least 1,163 journalists were imprisoned worldwide between 2023 and 2025, 568 of whom are still being held in detention.
