In France, a doctor named Frédéric Pechier is accused of poisoning 30 patients over a period of 9 years. 12 of them have died. This was reported by Euronews.
It is reported that court proceedings on this case have already begun. If the charges are confirmed, the man could be sentenced to life imprisonment.
The doctor's name first came to the attention of French law enforcement in January 2017. At that time, the heart of one of Pechier's patients—36-year-old Sandra Simard—stopped during a routine operation.
According to investigations, a lethal dose of potassium was found in the bag used to anesthetize the patient. It is known that Pechier, a father of three, deliberately poisoned the medical equipment his colleagues used in order to harm them. After that, he himself "helped" his colleagues resuscitate the patients.
During the court hearings, the doctor emphasized his innocence, claiming he had never committed such acts. It is said that 12 patients, ranging in age from 4 to 89, died as a result of the poisonings. The doctor's lawyers stated that they "will use every opportunity to prove Pechier's innocence."
The court proceedings are expected to continue until December. The judges noted that currently, Pechier is not in custody but is free under judicial supervision.
