On September 8, when tens of thousands of people marched towards the parliament building, the police used tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and even live ammunition. According to official information, at least 17 people were killed and more than 400 were injured.

Protesters raised slogans such as "Don't fight corruption, fight social networks." The government, in turn, imposed a curfew in the capital's government district and brought in troops.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stated it was "concerned" by the events and called for a prompt and transparent investigation.
