The NATO summit held in Washington is being assessed as a political victory for European states. According to Dirk Emmerich, a political commentator for DW, during the summit, European allies protected Ukraine from being weakened and clearly defined their position.
"Trump chooses subjugation, not cooperation. He wanted to show exactly that. But this time, everything was different. The Europeans did not yield to such pressure," writes Emmerich.
He emphasizes that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, stressing the need for a ceasefire before the negotiations, came forward with an important initiative. "As long as the war continues, there can be no territorial concessions," he said.
Dirk Emmerich notes that Trump himself was once close to this position but is now siding with Putin. Despite this, he did not give a sharp response this time and preferred to remain silent.
"Perhaps Trump simply thought that, in the end, Europe will bear the war costs anyway. And after a deal with Putin, America will quickly exit this situation," speculates the journalist.
Therefore, Dirk Emmerich asks a question: is it worth such a price? And he answers himself—the events that occurred within this one week have had more significance than those of the last two and a half years.
