The European Parliament officially stated that the main factor hindering Georgia's accession to the European Union is the "authoritarian direction" of the country's government and the "absence of fair elections." This was announced in the official statement of the parliament on its X social media page.
It was noted that under current conditions, "Georgia's path to EU membership is effectively frozen." While parliament members expressed their "support for the Georgian people," they emphasized that they "do not recognize the country's current government."
Georgia submitted its application for EU membership in March 2022 and later obtained candidate status. However, in the summer of 2024, the Council of Europe de facto suspended the accession process. The reason was the adoption of the "foreign agents law" in the country and the government's increased pressure despite mass protests against it.
The European Union also described the recent parliamentary elections as "fabricated." The ruling "Georgian Dream" party won these elections.
Meanwhile, the European Parliament reminded that if the Georgian government is serious about joining the EU, it must hold fair and free elections.
