After the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, more than two million Syrian refugees returned to their homeland. This was announced by Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

According to him, this process reaffirms the necessity for political solutions:

“This shows us not the necessity for new instability and waves of displacement, but rather the need for political solutions,” — Grandi wrote on the social network Twitter.

Grandi is currently in Lebanon. He headed to Syria on the occasion of World Refugee Day on June 20.

According to reports, the Lebanese government has developed a plan to repatriate nearly 1.5 million refugees who fled from Syria in stages. According to the plan, up to 300,000 Syrians will return from Lebanon to their homeland by September 2024.

Each returning refugee will be paid 100 dollars in cash. However, upon their return, they must agree not to seek asylum in Lebanon again.

Meanwhile, the German government is also considering reinstating deportation to Syria. However, according to the latest assessment by the German Federal Foreign Office, the security situation in Syria remains “seriously unstable.”
