The North Atlantic Alliance — NATO has shortened this year's summit program from the traditional three sessions to just one session. This is to be cautious about the impatience and unpredictable actions of US President Donald Trump. This was reported by “The Financial Times”.
According to information, the summit taking place in The Hague, Netherlands, will have a working session that lasts only 2.5 hours. This decision was made to prevent Trump from getting bored during the meeting and leaving early.
“This measure was taken with the intent to keep Trump from getting bored and leaving the summit midway,” — writes FT.
Let us remind you, at this year's “G7” summit, Trump left the event early and criticized other state leaders on social media. NATO officials are making efforts to avoid such a situation this time.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte favors focusing on only one important issue at the summit — this is the proposal to increase military spending to 5 percent of GDP by 2030. So far, Spain and a few other countries oppose these plans. The Spanish government is worried that an increase in defense spending might negatively impact social welfare.
The summit will take place on June 24–26 in The Hague. The participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also expected at the event.
