The wife of Kazakhstan's first president Nursultan Nazarbayev, former first lady Sara Alpisovna Nazarbayeva, passed away at the age of 84 in Almaty, it was reported. This was announced by the author of the YEDILOV ONLINE telegram channel, Yerbol Edilov here.

«The spouse of Kazakhstan's first president Nursultan Nazarbayev, Sara Nazarbayeva, has left this world at the age of 85. I express my deepest condolences to her family and relatives. May her faith be strong», — wrote Edilov.

However, he later deleted this post and stated that Sara Alpisovna is still alive. At the same time, he replaced the previous black-and-white picture with a colored image.

According to reports, Sara Nazarbayeva was in a critical condition in the last days at the National Hospital of the Presidential Affairs Administration (“Sovminka”) in Almaty. The news of her hospitalization emerged on May 5, 2025.

Some sources say that her condition was monitored by Kazakhstani and foreign doctors, but it is reported that there was no chance of saving her life.

Deputy of Kazakhstan's Parliament Daulet Muqaev also wrote about her death:

«Sara Alpisovna has passed away. I wish her faith be enriching… May she be in God's protection», — he also added a black-and-white photo.

Contrary to this news, journalist Aset Mataev declared that Sara Nazarbayeva is alive, explaining the fuss with a visit by Nursultan Nazarbayev to the «Sovminka» area.

«Sara Alpisovna is alive. Nursultan Nazarbayev visits her frequently. This has been confirmed by several reliable sources», — said Mataev.

At the moment, Sara Nazarbayeva's death has not been officially confirmed.

Biography

Sara Nazarbayeva was born on February 12, 1941. She was married to Nursultan Nazarbayev, and they have three daughters. In her youth, she worked in production before studying to become an economist.

In 1992, she founded the charity foundation "Bobek", which is dedicated to supporting orphaned children and implementing the "Self-Understanding" program in schools.

For her work, she was honored by neighboring and international organizations for her contribution to protecting the rights of children.

Sara Nazarbayeva served as the official first lady of Kazakhstan from 1991 to 2019. In 2023, the media reported that she had reverted to her maiden name, Qonaqay. According to sources, her family is currently in Almaty.
