According to Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, this issue was discussed over the phone with the Iranian Foreign Minister, and Tehran has promised to thoroughly investigate the incident. Baku is awaiting the results of the investigation.
It is reported that on March 5, a drone struck the international airport terminal in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, and another drone landed near a school in the village of Shakharabad. Following the incident, school students and teachers were evacuated.
After the incident, Mujtaba Demirchilu — Iran's ambassador to Azerbaijan — was summoned to Baku, where a note of protest was presented to him. Ilham Aliyev called the attack a "terrorist act" and demanded an apology from Iran. Similarly, Recep Tayyip Erdogan also sharply condemned the attack.
Nakhchivan is an exclave of Azerbaijan bordering Turkey, Iran, and Armenia, and is considered a strategically important area in the South Caucasus.
