Nigeria is experiencing its second mass abduction of children this week. On Friday, armed individuals stormed the Holy Mary Catholic School in the city of Papiri, Niger State, and abducted children and teachers. According to the Christian Association of Nigeria, 303 children and 12 school staff (four women and eight men) were abducted.
It was previously reported that 215 children and 12 teachers were abducted, but the bishop of the Kontagora diocese, which has jurisdiction over the school, later provided updated figures.
"After we left the school in Papiri, we decided to conduct additional headcounts, checks, and investigations regarding those we thought had escaped successfully, and we discovered that another 88 students who had attempted to escape were caught," he said.
Thus, nearly half of the school's 629 students were listed as abducted.
