Former US President Donald Trump issued a sharp ultimatum to Putin regarding the establishment of a peace agreement over the Russia-Ukraine war. He announced this during a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London.
"A peace deal must be reached within 10 or 12 days starting today. There is no reason to wait. We waited 50 days, but there has been no positive progress," Trump said in response to journalists' questions.
Trump's statement came after the latest meeting between Ukrainian and Russian diplomats in Istanbul. The negotiations only resulted in an agreement on prisoner exchanges.
Ukraine proposed holding a summit at the presidential level by the end of August, but Russia considers such a meeting appropriate only if it is ready to sign an agreement. Vladimir Putin has not personally participated in any of the negotiations.
Trump did not hide his dissatisfaction with the situation: "I am disappointed in Putin. We thought we had resolved this issue several times. Then he goes and launches missiles at Kyiv, resulting in defenseless people dying in their homes. Bodies lie in the streets. This is not the way to do business," he said.
During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on July 15, Trump had warned about new sanctions against Russia.
Additionally, EU countries have agreed to provide Ukraine with billions of dollars in military aid, including Patriot air defense systems.
