As a result of China's political pressure in Hong Kong, the last pro-democratic political structure in the country — the Social Democrats League has ceased its activities. This was announced to the media by the organization's leader Chan Po Yin.

According to the party members, they have been fighting for political freedom for many years, but the national security law that came into effect in 2020 has significantly increased the pressure on them. Since the law was enacted, any protests against Beijing in Hong Kong are deemed as “terrorism”, “secessionism”, or “actions against the state”.

For your information, the law was further strengthened in 2024: according to it, any actions against the state could lead to a life imprisonment sentence.

With the dissolution of the Social Democrats League, the official opposition in Hong Kong has completely disappeared. It should be noted that this is the third political party that has self-dissolved in the past two years.

Let us remind you that Hong Kong was a British colony until 1997 and the “one country, two systems” policy was applied to it. However, in recent years, Beijing has been gradually eradicating these freedoms.
