This decision was adopted in response to the escalation of violence and human rights violations in Gaza. The decision implies halting relations "until Israel adheres to international law and humanitarian rights and the fundamental rights of Palestinians are ensured" here.
The decision was supported by the Comunes in Barcelona, the Social Party (PSC), and the Republican Party of Catalonia (ERC). Additionally, the friendship and cooperation agreement with Tel Aviv, which has been in effect since 1998, was also terminated. The decision includes measures such as terminating cooperation with the Israeli government and its companies, banning Israel's participation in events like the Mobile World Congress, and refusing to accept ships carrying arms to Israel at the port of Barcelona.
Barcelona's mayor, Jaume Colboni, emphasized this decision, stating "Barcelona must act according to its role as a city of peace" and assessed the situation in Gaza as "inhumane."
This decision caused political debates in the city council. The Junts party remained neutral, while the PP and Vox voted against. In addition, the Catalonian government also decided to close its external trade office in Tel Aviv.
