It is noted that the Urgench international airport, which is important for developing tourism and facilitating trade, provides vital air connectivity for local residents and visitors. The airport is also a crucial point for developing tourism as it is located close to the historic city of Khiva, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Currently, 8 airlines operate regular flights to Urgench airport, and about 40 airlines operate charter flights. In 2023, the airport served 590,000 passengers, and the volume of passenger traffic is expected to increase by 17% in 2024. According to preliminary forecasts, during the PPP period, the volume of passenger traffic is expected to grow by an average of 7.5% annually.

The project is planned to be implemented based on the "Build-Operate-Transfer" (BOT) model. Companies with experience in implementing such projects are invited to participate.

The project includes the following modernization works:

  • Construction of a new runway 3500 m in length;
  • Construction of the main taxiway;
  • Construction of 2-phased taxiways;
  • Construction of 2 connecting taxiways;
  • Reconstruction of the existing apron;
  • Construction of a new administrative terminal;
  • Construction of a new cargo terminal;
  • Construction of a building for special equipment;
  • Construction of a new food court;
  • Construction of a new passenger terminal designed to serve 1000 passengers per hour for international flights (both departures and arrivals) and 300 passengers per hour for domestic flights (both departures and arrivals), with an area of 39 thousand m².
