The president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, commented on the national team's participation in the 2026 World Cup being under question. The Marca publication reported on this.
The military-political conflicts observed in the region lately are also affecting the sports sphere. Mehdi Taj rates the team's chances of participating in the competition low following the attacks carried out by the USA.
"Given the events happening these days and the attack carried out by the United States, it is difficult to look at the World Cup with hope. However, the final decision on this issue should be made by the leaders of sports organizations," says the federation head.
For reference, the Iranian national team had secured its 2026 World Cup ticket and taken a place in Group "G". According to the draw, the team is set to face Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. A notable aspect is that all three group stage matches are scheduled to take place precisely on US territory.
