At a time when U.S. claims to the Arctic region are intensifying, three NATO member states — Germany, Sweden, and Norway — announced they will send military personnel to Greenland. This was reported by "DW" on January 14.
According to information, the military personnel will arrive on the island between January 15-17 as part of a reconnaissance mission. The main goal of the mission is to study possibilities for ensuring security in the region and to support Denmark, particularly in the field of maritime surveillance.
It is stated that Germany will send 13 soldiers, Norway 2, and Sweden an unspecified number of officers on the mission. It is emphasized that the operation is being overseen by Denmark and has not been coordinated with the U.S.
This decision was made against the backdrop of Washington's claims regarding Greenland. U.S. President Donald Trump has stated several times that Greenland is of strategic importance for U.S. national security under conditions of increasing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic.
