The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded this year's Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
She was deemed worthy of the award for her peaceful and persistent struggle to promote democracy in the country.
Committee Chairman Jørgen Watne Frydnes emphasized that Machado had fought "courageously and tirelessly" for the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people. The prize is seen as international recognition of her work in this regard.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump has again been left without a Nobel Prize. He had previously claimed to be worthy of the award, stating he had "ended seven wars." Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev had also supported Trump's nomination.
For the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, 338 candidates have been nominated, which is one of the highest numbers in recent years.
