Punishments for the crime of human trafficking have been strengthened in Uzbekistan. Yesterday, on May 19th, the law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On Strengthening Punishments for the Crime of Human Trafficking” which amends Article 135 of the Criminal Code was adopted.
Accordingly, committing the crime of human trafficking using false documents, as well as confiscating, hiding, or destroying documents verifying the victim's identity, is punishable by imprisonment from 5 to 10 years.
Previously, the punishment for this crime was imprisonment from 5 to 8 years.
Furthermore, if this crime results in the death of the victim or other serious consequences, the punishment is imprisonment from 10 to 15 years.
Previously, the punishment for this crime was imprisonment from 8 to 12 years.
The law comes into force from the day it is officially published.
