Floods in North Korea have left over 4,000 residential areas and 3,000 hectares of agricultural land underwater. This was reported by the "Türkiye" publication
According to the source, the new phase of floodings has been observed in the city of Sinuiju in North Korea and the Uiju district near the border with China. Thousands of homes have been submerged underwater in seconds due to heavy rainfall and river overflow.
So far, approximately 3,000 hectares of agricultural land, as well as numerous public buildings, facilities, and roads have been submerged. This natural disaster led to a two-day emergency meeting of the ruling Workers' Party.
Leader Kim Jong Un has chaired the party meeting. He expressed serious concern about the damage caused, calling for strict measures to repair the affected areas.
North Korea's state media have been warning about the monsoon season in recent weeks. A program of emergency actions to cover the damage from extreme weather was announced.
The month of July is usually considered the annual monsoon season on the Korean peninsula. This season is characterized by rising river levels, increased rainfall, and unfavorable humid weather conditions.
Recent natural disasters have led to numerous landslides in the northern provinces of the country. As a result, train movements have stopped. Major highways have been buried.
The North Korean government has not announced the number of fatalities caused by the floods. Currently, rescue teams are conducting search and rescue operations in the northern districts.
5,000 people stranded in their own territories due to the flood were rescued by an operation with the help of army helicopters.
Criticizing the reliance of emergency institutions on the army’s rescue operation, Kim Jong Un stated, "I have previously warned the government to take precautionary measures, and the laziness and personal interest of those in significant positions have reached a very serious level," – he said.
